In this position, the girth also rests on the breastbone, which can absorb the pressure of the girth better than the soft belly. If the girth is behind the breastbone, it can be uncomfortable for the horse and hinder its breathing.

The girth should always be fastened just enough to ensure that the saddle is stable and secure on the horse. However, it should not hinder the horse's breathing or press in the stomach. As a rule, 1-2 fingertips should still fit under the closed girth.
