Keralit Hoof Strengthener
The proven help for hoof problems. Makes the horn stable, abrasion-resistant and elastic. Ideal for horn decomposition of the white line. Easy to use.
Contents 250 ml bottle, with brush and instructions
The KERALIT HOOF STRENGTHENER only stabilizes the keratin molecules directly on the horn surface, so that the layer thickness of the stabilized horn is approx. 0.4-0.5mm in healthy horn (see also Vet. med. Diss. B. Monhart, Zurich 2002). The hoof strengthener can penetrate cracks and crevices more easily due to its thin liquid form. This prevents further horn decomposition processes even in the case of covered horn damage, for example under the horseshoe.
This means that only the horn that is directly exposed to abrasion or harmful substances such as ammonia, bacteria and fungi is stabilized. An unnatural hardening of the horn or drying out, which would mean a reduction in the elasticity of the horn capsule, does not occur.
For which horses is KERALIT HOOF STRENGTHENER suitable?
The KERALIT HOOF STRENGTHENER can be used for all horses, ponies, donkeys and other hoofed animals. In zoos, for example, rhinos and tortoise shells are also treated with it.
For barefoot horses to strengthen the bearing edge, sole and white line. To reduce horn abrasion in horses with insufficient horn growth and poor horn quality. For horses shod with loose shoes. For cracked horn walls to preserve horn substance and horn capsule. For sensitive horses as a replacement for hoof insoles. For all horses with low heels and positioning errors, for decomposition of the white line (see illustration below), for hollow and loose walls and for laminitis horses to strengthen the white line.
How to use
Please read the instructions for use on the packaging. The following information is not a replacement for these. If you lose them, we will be happy to send you a new instruction manual. Alternatively, you can simply download the instruction manual (in the national languages D, E, F, NL) for the hoof firmer under the menu item "Service".
For barefoot horses, KERALIT HOOF STRENGTHENING is applied from below to the tread, the white line and, if the horse is sensitive, also to the sole. Brush from the side to approx. ¼ - ⅓ of the hoof wall height.
For shod horses, the hoof wall is brushed up to the nail holes. The hoof hardener should penetrate particularly into the old nail holes and be able to run under the shoe. The sole of the hoof can also be treated if necessary. This can replace the use of insoles and leather soles.
Treatment is usually carried out 1-2 times a week. In cases of extreme horn decomposition, treatment may be carried out every other day at first.
Bottle with 250ml, sufficient for approx. 3-4 months (warmblood, barefoot). For shod horses up to 6 months.
The question of using the instrument on a wet horn arises very frequently (especially in Internet forums).
The hoof hardener can also be used on wet horn without any problems. However, the horn's ability to absorb it is then limited, so it makes sense to use it more frequently, but with less hoof hardener. It makes less sense to use it on soaking wet or freshly greased hooves.
Another frequently asked question is the use of KERALIT hoof strengthener in the frog area.
Basically, the hoof hardener is absolutely harmless to the frog. The instructions for use only advise against constant use of the hoof hardener on the frog for the following reason:
The frog horn is an amorphous, i.e., in contrast to the wall horn, non-directional soft horn with a water content of around 40%. The frog should ideally have a rubbery, soft, elastic consistency. The hardness of the frog varies greatly due to changing environmental conditions (rain and dryness). This is completely normal. In extreme dryness in summer, the hoof horn, especially the soft horn of the frog, becomes much harder. The frog can then only carry out its dampening and hoof-widening function to a lesser extent. The soft horn also reacts to the hoof hardener on the surface by stabilizing, which is inappropriate for a frog substance that has already hardened through drying. There is therefore nothing to prevent the hoof hardener from being used in the frog area if it is actually too soft. (If in doubt, ask your vet, farrier or hoof carer)

The KERALIT HOOF STRENGTHENER is not suitable for children’s hands.
