  • Atcom Allergo-Vital - with diatomaceous earth, vegetable oils and zinc to support the skin

The tendency to develop allergies has increased significantly in recent decades, and not only in humans. Animals, including horses, are also increasingly affected by allergies. One reason for this is the environmental factors that have changed significantly compared to their original habitat. As a steppe animal, the horse was constantly on the move, its food was rather meager and the horse was unaffected by human hands. Nowadays, modern agriculture and environmental pollution have also severely restricted the horse's life pattern. The food is artificially sown and it comes into contact with chemicals and other non-natural substances.

Allergies include mainly allergic skin diseases (such as summer eczema), allergic respiratory diseases and feed intolerances.

Allergies can be caused by insect venom, insect saliva, sunlight, chemical care products, as well as pollen, fungal spores, mites, medication, feed, microorganisms, parasites and damaged intestinal flora.

The most important goal is therefore to keep the immune system in balance. Feeding is of considerable importance here. It is therefore important to aim for species-appropriate feeding with sufficient amounts of roughage and thus promote the maintenance of a healthy intestine, which plays a major role in an intact immune system. For an optimally functioning immune system, a balanced supply of all vital minerals, vitamins, trace elements, amino acids and fatty acids is also essential, because without these important micronutrients, the immune system can quickly become restricted or malfunction.

Atcom Allergo-Vital supplies allergic horses with targeted vitamins, minerals, trace elements and essential amino acids.

In addition to all its other important functions for the organism, zinc has also proven itself as a biological anti-allergy agent. Zinc also supports skin metabolism and has an immune-regulating effect. Due to these positive effects of zinc , Atcom Allergo-Vital contains a comparatively high proportion of 400 mg per daily dose (based on a 500 kg horse).

Another important trace element is manganese. Studies in humans have shown that a lack of manganese increases the tendency to allergies. Since manganese in natural feed is often poorly utilized by horses, an adequate supply through targeted supplementation - such as in Atcom Allergo-Vital - is certainly beneficial.

The essential amino acid methionine also has an immunoregulating effect.

Important antioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C and selenium are also used to regulate the immune system.

In addition to zinc, biotin is also important for skin metabolism - and not just for the hoof horn. It is generally synthesized via the intestinal flora. However, this is disturbed in many horses - and especially in those with allergic predispositions - so that additional biotin administration is necessary.

Atcom Allergo-Vital also contains vegetable and linseed oil. These high-quality oils contain linolenic acid, also known as omega-3 fatty acid. The body can convert this vital fatty acid into anti-inflammatory tissue hormones, which then reduce the release of histamines, thereby alleviating an allergic reaction.

The seaweed contained in Allergo-Vital by Atcom is not only rich in omega-3 fatty acids, but also rich in easily available trace elements, vitamins and amino acids.

Atcom Allergo-Vital also contains a high proportion of B-complex vitamins. The vitamin B complex balances the immune system and reduces hypersensitivity at the same time.

Diatomaceous earth is added to Atcom Allergo-Vital because of its supportive effect on skin function.

An intact intestinal flora is probably the most important antagonist of allergic reactions. Therefore, Atcom Allergo-Vital contains a high-quality proportion of yeast. This has proven to stimulate and stabilize the beneficial bacteria in the intestines and the intestinal flora. This supports the digestibility of nutrients.

In the human area, various studies have shown that natural and artificial food ingredients can have a negative impact on the course of eczema in some people with neurodermatitis, as so-called pseudoallergens. Pseudoallergies are not based on immunological mechanisms. Rather, there is a random release of histamine. Histamine can cause allergic reactions in the body. Preservatives and colorants as well as artificial and nature-identical flavorings are considered to be the main triggers of pseudoallergic reactions.
These findings were taken into account when developing Atcom Allergo-Vital . Therefore , Atcom Allergo-Vital (like the other Atcom Vital products) contains no artificial or nature-identical flavorings or preservatives. The antioxidant BHT (butyl-hydroxy-toluene) is also not added to Atcom Allergo-Vital (or any other Atcom Vital products).

Atcom Allergo-Vital has also avoided the use of herbs, as many herbs such as basil, dill, tarragon, lovage, bay leaf, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, mustard seed, thyme or fennel seed are known allergens.
Other single allergens are honey, carob, pumpkin seeds, malt (barley, wheat), poppy seeds, sugar beet seeds, mint, alfalfa and molasses.

Whether allergy symptoms actually occur depends on the degree of allergy disposition, the amount of "foreign dangerous" substances and other stressful environmental factors (allergen pressure) of the horse.
Allergic reactions can be prevented or kept to a minimum through clever management and allergen minimization. External factors such as dust pollution should be avoided or at least kept to a minimum. For example, for horses with eczema, grazing should be limited to between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. in order to keep exposure to allergy-causing insects as low as possible. In severe cases, it is advisable to blanket the horse.

When feeding, it should also be ensured that individual feeds are fed wherever possible (see feeding recommendations). Molasses, alfalfa and wheat components should be avoided for the reasons explained below.

Molasses has been shown to have a very high allergenic value in studies. It is therefore important to ensure that horses with a predisposition to allergies are fed food - including mineral feed - that is free of molasses.
Wheat is by far the plant that has been most manipulated and modified over the centuries. Overbreeding may produce large harvests, but it also clearly leads to an increase in allergenic potential.
Because wheat contains gluten, which is almost indigestible for horses, wheat should not be fed to horses anyway.

Many people are not aware that alfalfa can be relevant to allergies. Feeding alfalfa can trigger what is known as primary photosensitivity. Alfalfa contains what are known as exogenous photodynamic substances which, after being absorbed into the body, reach the skin unchanged, where they can cause a reaction. In addition to alfalfa, these substances are also found in buckwheat, clover and vetch. To avoid the risk of a corresponding reaction, especially in horses with sensitive skin, Atcom Allergo-Vital does not add alfalfa, often also labelled as green flour. It should also generally not be fed to horses with skin problems.
